Beauty| New in from Beauty Joint

I finally gave into temptation a few weeks back and placed my first order at Beauty Joint.
I'd been uhmming and ahhing for ages about it for months but then decided it had to be done!

$2.50 each

At the top of my list of things to buy were the LA Girl Pro Concealers. These concealers have been on my radar for a while thanks to my addiction to Youtube videos, and the fact that they cost next to nothing had me sold instantly. The concealers provide great coverage and I've been using Fawn religiously to neaten my neglected brows.

Nutmeg $5.00

This is my favourite concealer of all time! I was elated to find this on the site as my first jar had been stolen by the concealer thief. I absolutely love this stuff and tend to wear this on the days when I don't feel like wearing much make-up. Although the jar is relatively small, a little really does go a long way so you do get a lot of use out of it.

$2.75 each

Again, another purchase inspired by Youtube. I'm so happy I finally jumped on the Wet N Wild lipstick bandwagon because these matte lipsticks are truly the BOMBdotcom! I'm really into dark plum and wine shades at the moment and I've already worn the hell out of Sugar Plum Fairy and Ravin' Raisin. Although they are matte lipsticks, they aren't as drying as other brands and provide a bit of moisture.

I've got my eye on a few more Wet N Wild lipsticks that I'll be ordering in the future as well as a few lippies by Lime Crime. Can't wait!

OOTD| Spring Florals

Dress: ASOS
Cardigan: Dorothy Perkins
Belt: Primark
Boots: Office
I recently invested in a tripod so thought it was time to venture into OOTD posts. As you can see I'm not quite there yet with figuring it all out properly but I guess I'll perfect taking my own pictures in due time.
Anywhooooo, the weather was gorgeous today, very Springlike so I thought I'd be brave and don a floral dress with no tights.
NO TIGHTS.
I know. I could barely believe it myself, being the self proclaimed Queen of thick black tights and all!
This gem of a dress was found in the sale section of ASOS and I'm so in love with the exposed zip detail at the front. Perfect for any breastfeeding momma (apologies if this is tmi). Initially slightly ill-fitting, I teamed it with a skinny belt to cinch in the waist. It's such a shame the camera hasn't picked up my cardigan very well as it's absolutely stunning. It's slightly bouclĂ© looking with a leather trim around the neckline and a diagonal zip that gives it a bit of an edge.

Hope you enjoyed the weather today x

Hair| Braid Maintenance

I must admit I've become somewhat of a braidaholic! For almost 2 years now they have been my protective style of choice and I imagine they will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Braids played a huge role in my transitioning journey, masking the multiple textures of my hair, and still play a humongous part in my quest for long healthy natural hair, delivering me from the highly contagious hand-in-hair syndrome especially!
Apart from the 8 hours it takes me to install them (yes, I do them myself) they are extremely low maintenance and require very little effort, however, it is very important that they are taken care of effectively to prevent damage.

Here are a few tips and products that I have been using to ensure my hair is kept healthy whilst in braids:
  • Moisture, moisture and even more moisture.
Braided hair tends to lose moisture easily, so ensuring that your hair is hydrated will help to prevent damage and breakage. I prefer to use spray moisturisers instead of the creamy ones whilst rocking braids to make sure each strand is evenly saturated with moisture. I do this morning and night without fail.

I love love love the African Pride Braid Sheen Spray and the Jane Carter Solution Hydrate Quench which I alternate between. They are both lightweight moisturisers that don't weigh down my braids or cause much build-up and I almost forgot to mention they smell amazing!
  • Natural oils on scalp
To avoid dandruff and flaky scalp conditions caused by dryness, it is important to use a light oil that has moisturising properties on your scalp. My oil of choice is coconut oil which is light and non-greasy, allowing my scalp to breathe. I do this once or twice a week depending on how my scalp feels.

  • Wash and Condition hair often
I used to be really apprehensive about washing my braids when I started getting it done for fear of loosening the plaits and getting them messy, however I quickly learned that not doing so caused more harm than good. To make my life easier I do the conditioning first. I spray my braids with water then apply a moisturising conditioner to my hair ( I tend to use any  moisturising conditioner I can get my hands on). I use clingfilm to wrap my hair which traps in heat and allows the conditioner to really penetrate the hair shaft. I often do this overnight and proceed with washing and shampooing my hair in the morning.

Using a spray shampoo allows you to really get into every corner of your scalp and cleanses the hair effectively. I try to do this once a week but every other week at the very latest.
  • Sleep with a satin bonnet or scarf
Braids or no braids, this is something I always do to avoid rubbing my hair against my pillow. This also helps to preserve your braids and keep the them looking fresh for as long as possible.

And that's pretty much all I do!

Beauty| Mini NYX haul

NYX is fast becoming the make-up brand I turn to when in need of a beauty fix. The brand is ridiculously inexpensive, caters to black skin and the quality is pretty damn decent; in my opinion I think the quality of some of their products could easily rival some of Mac's!
I mean, have you tried their Concealer in a Jar? I rest my case.
Being an American brand, trying to find somewhere that actually stocks these products other than the internet is often a difficult task, but luckily I stumbled across The Beauty Store in the Dockside Outlet (Chatham, Kent) almost a year ago which has a growing collection of NYX products so on my last visit to the Outlet I couldn't help but pick up a few bits.
